Joining forces to make housing benefit work

We have teamed up with Shelter to write to MPs and the Government outlining how Housing Benefit traps people in unemployment and poverty.

The system is extremely complicated and bureaucratic. Even after navigating through all the form-filling necessary once a job is found and waiting weeks for your Housing Benefit claim to be processed, some people find they are actually worse off financially as their benefits are so sharply withdrawn when they start work.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is currently undertaking a review of Housing Benefit. We together with our campaign supporters are calling on them to deliver on the Government’s ‘work pays’ message to reform Housing Benefit.

Rough Sleeping campaign breakthrough.....

Thanks to all of you who signed up to our "Put rough sleeping to bed for good" campaign. The Government has launched a new package of measures, backed by £200 million of investment, to end rough sleeping rough sleeping by 2012. Changes to the statutory safety net for people at risk of homelessness will be considered to support this.

This is a real breakthrough for Crisis, our supporters and others in the sector. We will be holding Government to its pledge and will continue to campaign until there is a genuine safety for all.
