Crisis Skylight Newcastle opened in April 2007, modelled on the successful Crisis Skylight Centre in London.
The new centre delivers exciting learning opportunities to the homeless community in the form of free practical and creative workshops and structured learning courses.
Over 40 volunteers have been recruited to help and encourage our members in sessions, in touring our building and providing administration and teaching support. We also have volunteering opportunites in our Skylight cafe.
Volunteers are integral to what Skylight does so well in helping those break the cycle of homelessness and the barriers that surround homelessness.
We currently have a high number of members attending our ESOL sessions, giving us greater demand for classroom assistants with an ESOL background. If you feel you are able to contribute to the sessions, please let us know as soon as possible.
This role is based in the Crisis reception on the ground floor. You will answer phone calls and welcome guests to Crisis and Skylight.

Crisis Skylight Café is an inspiring, working café on the ground floor of the skylight building. Open to the public, the café provides a route into work for homeless people. Under the guidance of an experienced café manager, trainees receive individually structured training leading to recognised qualifications in food hygiene, customer care and health and safety, as well as more specialised skills in food preparations.
The café relies on volunteers to help with the day to day running of what is proving to be a very successful business. Volunteers should have a background in catering and a knowledge of issues faced by homeless people. Volunteering in the café would give them opportunities to gain skills in supervision, training and management roles.
Trainees are welcome to come along with no experience, but should be ready to move forward into employment. Along with any training they undertake they will also receive help, support and guidance to achieve their chosen goal.
