Homeless people's perceptions

  • Many have a negative perception of the private rented sector. They may see it as being responsible for causing homelessness.
  • Many believe that the assured short-hold tenancy system means that landlords are likely to automatically evict tenants after six months and that renting privately is therefore intrinsically insecure.
  • Many think that remaining on the waiting list for social housing is the most secure way of ensuring a sustainable, affordable home, though in reality council-housing stock continues to decrease.
  • Some may be put off by lack of experience of living independently and managing a private tenancy.
