Nazeem's story

Nazeem had worked for several years in IT but after a career change and a number of jobs that did not work out he got behind with his rent and became homeless.

After about eight months sleeping rough, he came to Crisis Open Christmas in 2006 - this was the turning point for him.

Finding out about the Crisis Learning Zone

It was there that he heard about the courses at the Crisis Learning Zone and started on a self-development course in the new year.

He said: "That is what helped me build up my confidence. You lose your confidence and motivation on the streets. What you really need when you are homeless is the chance to build up confidence again. Once I did that course I started moving forward.”

Soon the tutors at the Learning Zone noticed the way that Nazeem was helping others in the class and encouraged him to use his skills as a volunteer, helping out in computing classes.

Nazeem said: "I never thought I would have the patience to teach other people, but actually I've really enjoyed it. I want others to have the chances to learn that I have had."

A better future

Nazeem has made the most of this new start and new skills and has now got a job working for a charity teaching IT to ex-offenders. He's looking forward to a brighter future.

“I have had a lot of help here at Crisis and have it has been an amazing journey," he said.
