Share Giving

Share Giving Opportunity

Ms Vinodka Murria

In February 2004, Ms Vinodka Murria gave a large donation of shares to Crisis. A partner at Elderstreet Investments, a UK venture capital fund manager, she was familiar with the benefits she could claim under the share-giving scheme.

Vinodka first learnt about our work from her colleague Marjoleine Buker.

Marjoleine began her relationship with Crisis thanks to her former Company’s involvement in our annual Christmas Card Challenge.

Marjoleine Buker explains her support for Crisis

“It was not until I started doing voluntary work with Crisis at Christmas that I really understood the crucial work the organisation does with the homeless and vulnerably housed. I had already heard many positive stories from other people who had given their time over the holiday period and decided several years ago that it was my turn. I haven't looked back since.”

Fuelled by her own experience of working with our homeless guests, Marjoleine has become an advocate for Crisis amongst her peers.

“My experience with Crisis at Christmas fills me with enthusiasm and passion each year. The stories I relate to everyone who will listen has resulted in four of my friends also becoming volunteers and, at work, Vin has very generously made a large share donation.”

Inspired by Marjoleine’s account of her time working with our homeless guests, Vinodka was motivated to help as she could.

“I had intended to volunteer but always found the little holiday time I had was taken up by other commitments. When this opportunity came up I was delighted to be able to help Crisis with their work through donating.”

Transferring the shares was simple and Crisis were able to dispose of one batch straight away, holding on to a second until they reach fruition.

Marjoleine has now left the UK and moved to Dubai to work for Barclays Capital (another Crisis supporter). She is keen to maintain her links with Crisis and her fellow volunteers and wishes us all the best.

A Nation of Share Owners

Twelve million individuals own shares in the UK, worth an incredible £200 billion. Whilst donating shares to charity is not a new way of giving, in April 2000, the Government introduced new tax advantages to make it even more attractive. Donors giving shares to charity are entitled to claim full tax relief equal to the market value of the shares and any associated costs such as brokers' fees. For example, if a higher rate taxpayer gives £1,000 worth of shares to charity, they may pay up to £400 less in income tax that year. Whether you are tidying up your portfolio, or simply feel that this is the most effective way for you to give, do get in touch with us to discuss the best way forward.
