Support provided by deposit schemes

Support for tenants

Schemes support homeless people to find and view available properties and to understand their rights and responsibilities as a tenant.

Schemes may help with benefit application and processing. They may help tenants plan budgets and save towards their own deposit. They may foster involvement in the local community through befrienders and volunteering opportunities.

To get a better idea of how deposit schemes help homeless people read stories from two deposit scheme tenants, John and Martin.

Support for landlords

Schemes provide a free service to landlords, helping them source tenants quickly and appropriately and understand their rights and responsibilities as a landlord.

Schemes may provide landlord packs, tenancy agreements and inventories and take-up tenants references. They may offer legal advice and advice on repairs and improvements. They may provide newsletters and facilitate landlord forums.

To get a better idea of how deposit schemes work with landlords, read about Malcolm Wood, a landlord letting properties through a Norfolk deposit scheme.
