A Positive View

A Positive View

Wim Wenders Photograph for the exhibition

For one month only, from 10 March to 5 April 2010, A Positive View showcased an extraordinary range of photography on a truly international scale, under the Royal Patronage of Prince William.

The exhibition took viewers on a provocative and unsettling journey through a rich collection of photographic images from around the world that together challenged preconceptions and raised questions about the lives we dream of, the lives we live and what can be done to help those on the outside.

The fully curated, museum scale, photographic exhibition was held at Somerset House, London and bought together 130 signed works including rare, vintage prints.

The exhibition culminated in an international photography auction at Christie's Auction House raising a staggering £305,600 for the charity.

A Positive View and the photography group

The exhibition also featured work from the Crisis photography group. Photography is one of the many creative opportunities provided to homeless and vulnerably housed people by Crisis Skylight. The courses are open to everyone and aim to instill confidence and knowledge of how to use photography in a way that's meaningful to each individual. Photography has a wider benefit too. It helps people express themselves and rebuild their self esteem.

Under the guidance of the Crisis photography tutor and a Positive View's curator, Nadim Samman, each individual's strengths were drawn out, inspiring them to create a more personal style.

The works were assessed on individual creativity, visual impact, storytelling and technical perfection and everyone responded well, producing some very powerful and moving work.

After review, work from five members was selected to be part of the exhibition and hang on their own merit, next to some of the world's most revered photographers;

  • Paul Kelly
  • Joseph De-Haan (aka Whakapai)

From Crisis Skylight Newcastle

  • Jeff Hubbard
  • Stella Lado Joseph
  • Grant David Read

From Crisis Skylight London.
