A private matter?
With the recession biting, more tenants were finding themselves suddenly made homeless - not because they had failed to pay the rent, but because their landlord's property had been repossessed. We estimated that there are 324,000 tenants renting privately who could be at risk of this catastrophe of sudden eviction befalling them.
And so, Crisis joined with partners to launch A private matter? campaign in March 2009, to make sure private tenants could be given decent notice by the court. With the help of our e-campaigners we made a splash and 126 MPs signed a motion calling for change and the Government said it would support a change in the law.
Victory - a new law!
In December 2009 we were delighted when Dr Brian Iddon MP announced he would use a special parliamentary procedure to bring in a new law to make sure all tenants with landlords facing repossession can have decent notice to find somewhere else. Once again our e-campaigners swung into action, persuading MPs to turn up for a critical vote.
The proposed law passed just in time before the general election campaign started in April 2010.
This was a major victory for Crisis, our e-campaigners and - most importantly of all - the 324,000 tenants estimated to have been at risk and who now have some protection.
