Art and Music

Crisis is committed to its involvement in arts and music projects that raise significant funds for Crisis and offer our members the opportunity to showcase their talents.

A Positive View

For one month only, from 10 March to 5 April 2010, A Positive View will showcase an extraordinary range of photography on a truly international scale, under the Royal Patronage of Prince William.

The exhibition takes viewers on a provocative and unsettling journey through a rich collection of photographic images from around the world that together challenge preconceptions and raise questions about the lives we dream of, the lives we live and what can be done to help those on the outside.

This fully curated, museum scale, photographic exhibition is being held at Somerset House, London and will bring together 130 signed works including rare, vintage prints.  For the first time the exhibition will include images from contemporary artists whose creative practice incorporates photography, as well as geographically diverse representations from Korea, China, Japan and West Africa.

A Positive View and the Crisis photography group

The exhibition will also feature work from the Crisis photography group. Photography is one of the many creative opportunities provided to homeless and vulnerably housed people by Crisis Skylight. The courses are open to everyone and aim to instill confidence and knowledge of how to use photography in a way that's meaningful to each individual. Photography has a wider benefit too. It helps people express themselves and rebuild their self esteem.

Under the guidance of the Crisis photography tutor and a Positive View's curator, Nadim Samman, each individual's strengths were drawn out, inspiring them to create a more personal style.

The works were assessed on individual creativity, visual impact, storytelling and technical perfection and everyone responded well, producing some very powerful and moving work.

After review, work from five members was selected to be part of the exhibition and hang on their own merit, next to some of the world's most revered photographers;

  • Paul Kelly
  • Joseph De-Haan (aka Whakapai)

From Crisis Skylight Newcastle

  • Jeff Hubbard
  • Stella Lado Joseph
  • Grant David Read

From Crisis Skylight London.

Crisis Hidden Gigs

Crisis Hidden GigThese were a series of music events featuring big acts in secret locations to raise awareness of the hidden homeless. Acts such as Noah and the Whale, The Magic Numbers, Hot Chip headlined this year's gigs, which also included a rare performance from Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, playing alongside Amadou & Mariam.

Thousands saw 30 bands at the seven events and joined us in raising money and awareness for the hidden homeless. More on Crisis Hidden Gigs
