Café from Crisis, London

Café from Crisis, London opened as the first Café from Crisis in 2004 and was located in the heart of East London until it closed its doors in 2022.

Café from Crisis was an award-winning training café and social enterprise in the heart of Spitalfields from 2004-2022.

Over these 18 years, we have worked to end homelessness through practical hospitality and catering training whilst serving fresh and socially conscious food and coffee in a bustling café. Through technical training such as kitchen craft and barista skills, our members gained qualifications and confidence in a public-facing environment where they were supported on their journey out of homelessness.

The cafe, supported by our members, local organisations and sector partners, worked to build opportunities across communities to end homelessness. Our partners have helped our positive reach spread to the wider community and we’ll be exploring ways to ensure this continues beyond our café.

Since 2008, half our trainees have come through local charity Switchback, who support young men recently released from prison with intensive one-to-one support alongside their training at Café from Crisis.

We have partnered with socially focused suppliers such as The Dusty Knuckle, Fareshare and Dalstons. Our coffee is no exception either. We partnered with Volcano Coffee Works to create an ethically sourced and unique coffee to be sold in cafés and shops across the UK. We’re excited that Crisis Coffee will continue to be sold through our coffee bars (located in four of our Crisis shops) and online retailers to raise vital funds for our work. We hope that supporters and partners of Crisis will purchase the coffee and help do a little good whilst drinking a brew.

Sully's story
I never thought I would be working in coffee but I knew the moment that I did the barista training I had a passion for it. Sully
