Housing
Crisis develops innovative solutions that help people into homes they can call their own.
The private rented sector
Because they are not a priority for social housing, the private rented sector is the only solution for many single homeless people.
We are leading the way to achieve greater access to private rented accommodation for single homeless people. Crisis runs a National Advisory Service providing consultancy advice and support to local authorities and homelessness agencies across England and Scotland.
Private Rented Sector (PRS) Access Development Programme
In 2010, the Department for Local Communitities and Government announced new funding to assist single homeless people into the PRS to be managed by Crisis. So far, the funding has helped set up 48 new PRS access schemes across England which will create over 1,500 new tenancies. Following on from this initial success, Crisis was awarded a further £8m from the DCLG to expand the Crisis PRS Access Development Programme over the next two years. Through the three-year programme, over 8,000 single homeless people will be helped into sustainable accommodation.
The Crisis Private Rented Sector (PRS) Access Development Programme is now looking to fund 80 new local schemes in 2011-12. Voluntary and community organisations are invited to apply to the programme for funding to help single homeless people access and sustain PRS accommodation in their local area. For more information, please visit the private rented sector website.
"Crisis is delighted to be working with the Department of Communities and Local Government and local voluntary organisations to kick-start the establishment of new private rented sector access schemes. These schemes will help people overcome financial barriers, match them to good landlords and help more individuals avoid the perils of homelessness." (Crisis Chief Executive Leslie Morphy)
Housing Coach
Crisis delivers a housing coach model to prepare and assist people in accessing PRS accommodation. This equips them with the skills to communicate with landlords and to manage fluctuating income and benefits.
Please note this is an in-house service for Crisis clients only and no referrals from external agencies will be accepted.
