Homelessness in austere times: lessons from home and abroad
Friday 10 February 2 - 4pm
The Courtauld Institute of Art, Somerset House, The Strand, London, WC2R 0RN
Since 2010 there have been huge changes to the framework of support available to homeless people and those in housing need, with changes to the homelessness legislation and social housing; significant cuts to housing benefit; and reductions in funding for homelessness services. As we look forward to 2012, we face an uncertain year with the economy still in the doldrums and rising homelessness, and with many of these changes to support beginning to be fully felt.
Join Crisis and our panel of experts to discuss what the future holds for homelessness and homelessness services in the UK. With an eye on the challenging year ahead, this seminar will explore, compare and contrast changes to homelessness services and legislation changes in England, Scotland and Wales, whilst also considering what lessons can be learned from experiences in the US and Europe.
The expert panel
- Professor Dennis Culhane, Penn State University's Dana and Andrew Stone Chair in Social Policy, expert on homelessness and assisted housing policy in the US and advisor to the White House
- Professor Suzanne Fitzpatrick, Heriot Watt University, an expert on homelessness and housing exclusion in the UK and abroad
- Roger Wilshaw, Deputy Director of Homelessness and Support, Department for Communities and Local Government
- Katharine Sacks-Jones, Head of Policy, Crisis (Chair)
