Welfare to Work
Lack of work is a major cause and consequence of homelessness. Crisis believes the welfare system should make it easy for people to move into employment. Read more about the links between unemployment and homelessness.
The Government's Welfare Reform Bill makes sweeping changes to the benefits system. It aims to simplify welfare by introducing a new Universal Credit, to lift people out of poverty and to make sure work always pays. Crisis supports these aims, and has been campaigning for change for many years.
Crisis initiatives on welfare and employment
- The Crisis Welfare Network gives a voice to small or specialist organisations working hard to support people managing poverty, disadvantage and homelessness, as well as seeking to influence government policy.
- We will be continuing to campaign on welfare reform. Read our briefing for MPs on the Report Stage and Third Reading of the Welfare Reform bill.
- The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) previously launched a consultation on proposals for changes to the benefit system. Read Crisis' response here.
- Our research report, Homes and Jobs for All, outlines the ways in which the government can tackle homelessness and worklessness together.
- Within our Crisis Skylight Centres, we have a dedicated employment team, Crisis Employment Services, which help people to prepare for, to find and keep jobs. We also work in partnership with a range of organisations including employers, training providers, colleges and other homeless organisations, matching people to appropriate opportunities and jobs.
