OFFICIAL HOMELESSNESS STATISTICS

England - trends over time

  • 85,000 households were officially recognised as newly homeless by their local authority in England in 2008.

  • After rising from 2000 to 2003, numbers of households recognised as newly homeless fell by two-thirds between 2004 and 2008 and are now well below the levels of the late 1990s.

  • In 2008, half of the households officially recognised as newly homeless did not have dependent children.

  • Of those without dependent children, around half are deemed to be 'in priority need', and are therefore accepted by local authorities as being entitled to accommodation - whereas the other half are deemed 'not in priority need', and are therefore not entitled to accommodation.
