A review of government policies which impact on
homelessness by Crisis and NPI
85,000 households were officially recognised as newly homeless by their local authority in England in 2008.
After rising from 2000 to 2003, numbers of households recognised as newly homeless fell by two-thirds between 2004 and 2008 and are now well below the levels of the late 1990s.
In 2008, half of the households officially recognised as newly homeless did not have dependent children.
Of those without dependent children, around half are deemed to be 'in priority need', and are therefore accepted by local authorities as being entitled to accommodation - whereas the other half are deemed 'not in priority need', and are therefore not entitled to accommodation.
