OFFICIAL HOMELESSNESS STATISTICS
Wales - Temporary Accommodation

  • As at 31st March 2008, there were 2,900 homeless households in Wales placed in temporary accommodation by their local authority.

  • This is similar to the number in 2004.  It is, however, double the number in 2003 and four times the number of a decade ago.

  • Around half of the households placed in temporary accommodation by their local authority have dependent children and the other half are single person households without dependent children.

  • Of the 2,900 households in temporary accommodation at 31st March 2008, around 280 were placed in bed-and-breakfast accommodation.  This compares with 760 in 2005 but only 120 in 2002.  The Welsh Assembly has been considering introducing secondary legislation to reduce the placement of homeless households in such accommodation.
