New year, new term at Crisis Skylight centres
A new year has brought a new term for Crisis Skylight Centres across the country as London, Birmingham, Oxford, Edinburgh, Merseyside and Newcastle begin recruiting homeless and vulnerably housed members for the coming twelve months.
Following the success of Crisis at Christmas, where 3,200 people came through the doors, the charity hopes to see a number of the guests who attended and were linked up to Crisis' year-round services and offerings.
The terms, which kick off on 9 January will all contain packed schedules full of leisure and educational classes including art, music and drama, bike maintenance and carpentry, literacy, numeracy, IT and English. The courses give members the opportunity to work towards qualifications and help them make a life of homelessness a thing of the past.
The Crisis Skylight centres in Newcastle and London welcome thousands of people every year, while Crisis Skylight Birmingham operates as an outreach service offering sessions in a variety of community based venues.
Crisis Skylight Oxford in the city's Old Fire Station is the newest addition to the Skylight family and will offer numerous courses including creative writing, song writing, photography and even break-dancing.
Skylight Edinburgh has run courses since 2010 in conjunction with the Grassmarket Community Centre and offers music classes, a book group and a course on local history. The Merseyside-based centre offers an outreach service and the upcoming term will see some new courses available including a gardening one, ‘Play Guitar' and a digital photography course.
The centres also provide a critical link with the wider community, both through volunteer tutors, and the links fostered with a range of arts and education organisations.
Leslie Morphy, Crisis' Chief Executive, said: "We are very excited about the new Skylight terms and look forward to seeing some new faces and welcoming back some familiar ones too. We hope to see some of our Crisis at Christmas guests enjoying the range of classes on offer in the New Year and hopefully their participation will help transform their lives."
