Crisis welcomes second reading of tenants’ protection bill
Crisis has welcomed today’s (Friday 29 January) second reading of a bill to protect private tenants from sudden eviction when their landlord is repossessed, but is now calling on the Government to ensure enough parliamentary time is available for the bill to pass through both houses and become law.
Leslie Morphy, Chief Executive of Crisis, said: "It is a scandal that we are still in a position where private tenants whose landlords are repossessed are finding themselves evicted with little or no notice. Today's second reading of this bill is a clear demonstration that there is strong cross-party support for extra protection for people in this position.
"The Government must now ensure there is enough parliamentary time for the Bill to complete its passage through both houses in order to protect the 324,000 tenants at risk of short notice eviction and potential homelessness if their landlord is repossessed."
The Mortgage Repossessions (Protection of tenants etc) Bill is a Private Members Bill being brought forward by Dr Brian Iddon MP. It comes following a joint campaign from Crisis, Shelter, Citizens Advice and the Chartered Institute of Housing.
