How I'm supporting landlords to rent their properties to people experiencing homelessness

Alex Charles, Housing Procurement Officer

Finding a place to rent is tough, even when everything’s in your favour. But for people experiencing homelessness, finding somewhere can feel impossible. Upfront costs, like deposits and rent in advance, can be massive hurdles and make it even harder for people to get the stability they need.

That’s where I come in. Through Crisis, I work with landlords to make renting easier, fairer, and more accessible. I help landlords find tenants quickly and for free, while also making a real, positive difference in people’s lives.

How I Support Landlords

I know that being a landlord isn’t always easy. From trying to find the right tenants, having to deal with lots of paperwork and keeping an eye on finances, it can be a lot to manage. I help take the stress out of this process by offering:

  • A pool of ready-to-rent tenants
  • A personalised matching service to find the right fit for your property
  • A dedicated contact (me!) for a rapid & professional response to issues
  • Property visits and rent valuations
  • Help with setting up rent payments and benefits
  • Tenancy support if any issues come up

What are the benefits to landlords renting to people experiencing homelessness?

Renting to someone with experience of homelessness is a greatly rewarding experience. It feels good knowing that you’ve helped someone move on from living on the streets, or in poor quality temporary accommodation, into a safe and stable home.

And it feels even better knowing that you have support from Crisis to help you find someone suitable and to step in if any challenges arise during the tenancy.  I work closely with each person, supporting them to make sure that they’re ready to rent and maintain a home and I won’t just disappear once the keys are handed over; I’ll stick around to make sure everything runs smoothly.

Plus, let’s be honest, empty properties don’t make money. I can help you to fill vacancies quickly with tenants in need of stable, long-term housing.

Let's work together - how you can help

Every successful tenancy I help create is another step toward ending homelessness. That’s why I’m always looking for landlords who want to do good business while making a real impact in their community.

If you’ve got a property to let and want to work with tenants who will genuinely value the chance, let’s chat. I’d love to help you find the perfect match and together, we can help end homelessness.

About Crisis and TDS partnership

Crisis’ work with landlords is supported by the Tenancy Deposit Scheme Charitable Foundation (TDS) as part of three-year partnership to make the private rented sector work better for people facing homelessness. Our partnership with TDS enables us to have staff in local communities across the country who work with landlords to create routes into good quality homes for more of our members.
