Crisis responds to Femicide Census report 2018

Today (20 February) the latest Femicide Census reveals to number of women being killed by men in the UK in 2018. The report findings include:

  • 149 women killed by 147 men in the UK in 2018
  • 91 women (61%) were killed by their current or former partner
  • 41% (37 of 91) of women killed by a partner/former partner had separated or taken steps to separate from him
    • 30% of them (11/37) killed within the first month
    • 70% (24/37) killed within the first year, post separation

Hannah Gousy, Head of Policy and Campaigns at Crisis, said: “These deeply tragic figures shine a spotlight on the continued failure to protect women experiencing domestic abuse. Currently, women who leave their abuser have no guarantee to safe and settled housing. This can mean women have little option but to return to the very place they were at risk, often ending in fatal consequences.
“This simply cannot continue. Today’s figures must serve as a call to arms for the Government. The forthcoming Domestic Abuse Bill gives the Government the opportunity to protect those fleeing their abusers, and guarantee survivors of domestic abuse a safe, settled home.”
