Government introduces new six month notice period - Crisis Response

The Government has confirmed that the ban on evictions has been extended by four weeks and also that new six month notice periods will be in place until at least 31 March 2021.

Commenting on the new six month notice period Jon Sparkes, Chief Executive of Crisis, said: “This is a positive new development. It gives people more time to find somewhere new to live should they be served an eviction notice, and so for many removes the threat of imminent homelessness. It’s no silver bullet though. The economic impact of the pandemic is likely to sharpen existing inequalities and increase poverty. Thousands are likely to struggle to find an affordable, sustainable new tenancy even with six months’ notice.

“The Government must introduce emergency legislation so that once the courts do begin to process claims, judges will have the power to ensure that no one is unfairly evicted. Alongside this, they must provide financial support for renters struggling with arrears, so they can remain safe in their homes in the long-term.”
