Doughnut ingredients
- 4 cups plain flour
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 packet of yeast
- Pinch of salt
- 1 ½ cups of milk
- 2 tablespoons of plain Greek yoghurt
Doughnut coating ingredients
- ¾ cup of brown sugar
- ¼ cup of white sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground cardamon
- 1 cup water
Method
- Mix all the dry doughnut ingredients together and add the egg and yoghurt.
- Warm the milk and stir into the mixture to form a soft dough.
- Knead the dough for a few minutes and then slap the dough onto the table 3 or 4 times to make the dough softer.
- Divide the dough into 2cm balls and place onto a floured surface.
- With a little oil on your hands, roll the balls of dough into 3 -4cm long sausage shapes.
- Heat 1 litre of oil in a deep frying pan. You can test the heat of the oil with a pinch of flour to see if it fries.
- Once the oil is hot enough, place the doughnuts in the oil to fry until a light brown colour all over. It is important to move the doughnuts around to get an even colour all over. Remove the doughnuts from the oil and place on kitchen towel to cool.
- Mix all the doughnut coating ingredients together in a pan and bring to the boil so that the sugar melts.
- Place the cooled doughnuts on a tray suitable for pouring over the liquid coating mixture and toss the doughnuts in the mixture until they are all completely covered.
- Leave the doughnuts for the coating to dry/set and cool. Then keep cool until serving.
I make these when I have friends visiting or take them when I am invited to visit friends. They are a quick and easy traditional treat to make.
