Introducing Steve

Meet Steve, a dedicated philanthropist and Changing Lives volunteer whose energy and compassion help people take the next step out of homelessness.

Crisis’ Changing Lives programme offers grants that help people experiencing homelessness move into education, training, or selfemployment, empowering them to build a secure future.

Steve reflects on why he supports Crisis’ Changing Lives programme, inspired by its power to help people build independent futures. Hearing members’ stories and seeing their desire to give back has shaped how he thinks about impact. Volunteering has also brought the charity’s work to life in a way statistics alone can’t. His advice to others thinking of getting involved: simply, go for it.

What inspired you to get involved with our Crisis Changing Lives grant programme, both as a Philanthropist and as a volunteer?

I have been aware of Crisis and the incredible difference it makes since I was a student in London in the 1970's. Being now in a position to support the charity financially is great but I was interested to understand how the idea of supporting members until they had what they needed to move forward independently was achieved. The Changing Lives programme is a great initiative as it allows members to build an independent future and realise their dreams.

Can you share a moment or experience from volunteering that has stayed with you or shaped how you think about philanthropy?

Speaking to a couple of members who have successfully moved forward with help from the Changing Lives programme I realised how keen they were to give back to Crisis and help others. Being able to help support that process through a donation to Crisis and see how the effect of that donation can build over time feels extremely positive.

How has volunteering alongside your philanthropic giving deepened your understanding of the impact we make together?

Getting to meet Crisis staff and some members brings everything to life. Crisis produces some great statistics each year on the difference it makes but putting names and faces to them through volunteering brings it all to life.

What would you say to someone considering becoming both a supporter and a volunteer with Crisis?

If you can - do it!
