Safety guidance for Icebreaker

General health and safety advice.

  • Consult your GP before getting into cold water if you are pregnant, suffer from heart disease or lung conditions, have asthma, or any other medical conditions that might be affected by exposure to cold water.
  • We strongly recommend you wear a swim cap or woolly hat during your challenge to help retain body heat.
  • Remember to take slow breaths as you enter cold water, and don't over-exert yourself.
  • If you can no longer take part in Icebreaker, please stop. You can always continue at a later date.

Swimming safely.

  • If you choose to swim for your DIY Challenge, please read Beyond Swim's top tips for a safe swim
  • Only ever attempt to swim in an area you are familiar with, and be aware of weather conditions, and vessels using the water.
  • It is not compulsory to swim, so you may prefer to take on a cold-water challenge another way.

Safety advice for events in Brockwell, Parliament Hill, Bicester, Ponty and Jupiter Artland.

  • All participants will have a health and safety brief on the day, and venue staff will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.
  • Fancy dress is optional, but if you do wear fancy dress, please make sure that it does not affect your ability to swim safely.
