Rob and Barbara's bike ride from Land's End to John O'Groats
Last updated: 10.06.2026
40 years after their dream began, and 1,019 miles later, Rob and Barbara finally made it to John O’Groats, raising £2,500 for Crisis along the way. Rob tells us more about their bike ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats.
“As the Chair of the New Homes Board, I know how privileged I am to know where I will sleep tonight. Unfortunately, 330,000 families and individuals in this country don’t have a place to call home and I wanted to do a little something to help. Cycling over 1,000 miles with my wife seemed a fun way to do that!
“We originally had the idea of cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats in 1983, but that got interrupted by our 4 children. 40 years later we thought we better do it before we got too old – or are we already?!”
A trip of a lifetime
“Along the way, we endured strong winds and steep climbs – and in the 20 days we spent cycling we climbed over 15,000 metres – almost twice the height of Everest.
“But despite this, and the number of potholes, and a wasp sting above the eye, the feeling of getting to the finish line was special and something that will stay with us for a long time.
“On reflection, there were some real positives. We loved the beautiful diversity of the countryside. There were so many people who gave us generous support – from donating to Crisis to doing our laundry and giving us free cake!
“In total, we cycled 1,019 miles and burned over 40,000 calories – which is roughly equivalent to 114 chocolate caramel slices - meaning we probably just about broke even on that one!”
Our advice
“All in all, a great trip and, even if you’re just remotely thinking of doing this, my advice would be to get out on your bike & do it!”
