Why Home Can't Wait

We all need a home to lead a healthy life. But a lack of genuinely affordable homes means that thousands of us are waiting for the security of a settled home.

That's why Home Can't Wait. Because it's more than a roof over our heads. It's a place to belong, hope and dream.

Everything we need for a stable and happy life starts with somewhere safe to live.

But rising rents, the cost of living and a lack of genuinely affordable homes mean that nearly 300,000 families and individuals in England are facing the terrifying reality of homelessness.   

Every day without action is another painful wait for people experiencing the devastation of homelessness.

This isn't fair.

What can we do about it?

To fix this, we’re calling on the UK Government to make private renting more affordable and boost social homes. 

Why now?

Right now, there's a window of hope. The Prime Minister has pledged to end rough sleeping in England, which will change the lives of thousands.

But we know that to truly end homelessness, we must make homes more affordable.

What home means to Julie

“Home for health is so important. Because your stress is gone, like you know that tomorrow you’re going to be warm. You’re going to be fine.”

Julie and her son were forced to stay in temporary accommodation where they had to share a room and had no access to cooking facilities. They were homeless there for nine months. They have now moved into a permanent home.

How we can make housing affordable

 The UK Government is already investing in the biggest social homes building programme in England in the post war era. This is a huge and hopeful step in the right direction.

But for those of us facing homelessness, home can’t wait.  

Here's what the UK Government must do now:

  • Make private renting more affordable, starting with unfreezing housing benefit and restoring it to the real cost of rent.
  • Boost the number of social homes, the Government needs to bring forward funding to build new homes fast, buy suitable homes and bring 300,000 long-term empty homes back into use in England.

A lack of genuinely affordable homes means that thousands of us are waiting for the security of a settled home.

Record numbers of people are forced into homelessness

Nearly 300,000 households experiencing the worst forms of homelessness in England. This includes people who are living in temporary accommodation, and rough sleeping.

Renters are forced to cut back on essentials to pay rent

63% of tenants receiving benefits reported cutting back on essentials such as food, heating and clothing in order to pay their rent.
