Crisis responds to news that renters would get longer tenancies under government plans

Responding to news that renters would get longer tenancies under government plans Chief Executive of Crisis Jon Sparkes said:

“We warmly welcome the news know that the government is considering extending private renters’ contracts to three years. Losing a private tenancy is one of the main causes of homelessness, so this would be a hugely important step forward to help give stability to thousands of people across the country.

“When people have a stable home, they are far less likely to develop mental and physical health problems, and far more likely to develop support networks, find work, and build a stable future for themselves.

“We now eagerly await the full details of this proposal to ensure this is done right and that it truly protects renters. It should also be part of a package of support for renters, alongside a national register of landlords and lettings agencies, and help to rent schemes to ensure the most vulnerable renters can leave homelessness behind for good. ”
